From September 12, 2026 (Saturday) to December 31, 2026 (Thursday)The Gregorian Calendar System & Leap Years
The Gregorian calendar is the most widely used civil calendar in the world today. Introduced in October 1582 by Pope Gregory XIII, it reformed the Julian calendar to more closely align with the Earth's solar orbit of approximately 365.2422 days.
To maintain astronomical alignment, the Gregorian calendar uses the following leap year rules:
- Every year divisible by 4 is a leap year (366 days).
- Except years divisible by 100 are NOT leap years (e.g. 1900 was a common year).
- Unless the year is also divisible by 400, in which case it IS a leap year (e.g. 2000 was a leap year, and 2400 will be).
Business Days and Holidays in Date Calculations
Business Days (Working Days)
Standard business weeks consist of 5 days: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Saturdays and Sundays are classified as weekends.
Holiday Observance Shifts
In federal and commercial practice, if a holiday falls on a Sunday, it is observed on the following Monday. If it falls on a Saturday, it is observed on the preceding Friday.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does the "include end day" option work?
Standard date subtraction calculates the difference between dates (e.g. from Monday to Tuesday is 1 day). Enabling "include end day" counts both the start date and the end date as full active days (e.g. Monday and Tuesday count as 2 days).
How does month addition handle months with fewer days?
If you add 1 month to January 31, the target month (February) has only 28 days (or 29 in a leap year). The calculation caps the result to the last valid day of February (February 28 or 29).
Can I calculate dates in the BC/BCE era?
This calculator uses astronomical year numbering for CE dates. For historical dates before 1582, the Gregorian calendar is applied proleptically.

Date Calculator — Frequently Asked Questions
Q1 What is the difference between calendar days and business days? ▾
Calendar days include every consecutive 24-hour period regardless of the day of the week. Business days only count working weekdays (Monday through Friday), excluding weekends and observed federal holidays.
Q2 How does the "include end day" checkbox affect the result? ▾
Standard date difference calculates elapsed intervals (e.g. Monday to Tuesday is 1 day). Including the end day counts both dates fully (Monday to Tuesday equals 2 days).
Q3 How are leap years handled in date additions and differences? ▾
The calculator automatically applies the Gregorian leap year rule (years divisible by 4, except century years not divisible by 400), adding 366 days for leap years and adjusting February month arithmetic.
