BTU Calculator
Calculate heating and cooling BTUs, tons of air conditioning, and equipment sizing for any room, floor, or entire house.
BTU Calculator
Estimate the exact cooling capacity and heating power (BTU/hr, Tons, kW) required for an air conditioner, heat pump, or furnace based on room size, ceiling height, occupants, insulation, and sun exposure.

BTU Calculator — Frequently Asked Questions
Q1 What is a BTU and what does it measure? ▾
A British Thermal Unit (BTU) is the amount of heat energy required to raise the temperature of one pound of liquid water by one degree Fahrenheit. In HVAC, BTU/hr measures cooling and heating power.
Q2 How many BTUs do I need per square foot? ▾
As a rule of thumb, residential spaces require approximately 20 BTU per square foot of living space under standard 8-foot ceiling conditions.
Q3 How do you convert BTUs to Tons of air conditioning? ▾
Divide the total BTU/hr capacity by 12,000. Formula: Tons = BTU/hr ÷ 12,000. For example, a 24,000 BTU AC unit equals 2.0 Tons.
