How to Calculate Concrete Volume in Cubic Yards

Concrete is ordered and measured in cubic yards (1 yd³ = 27 ft³). To calculate the volume needed for a rectangular slab or patio:

Cubic Yards = (Length in feet × Width in feet × Thickness in feet) ÷ 27

Example: A 10 ft by 10 ft patio poured 4 inches thick (4 ÷ 12 = 0.333 ft):
Volume = (10 × 10 × 0.333) ÷ 27 = 33.33 ÷ 27 = 1.23 cubic yards.

Ready-Mix Truck Delivery vs Buying Pre-Mixed Bags

Pre-Mixed Bags (Small Projects < 1 yd³)

Best for small footings, fence posts, and minor repair jobs. One 80-pound bag yields 0.60 cubic feet, meaning you need 45 bags to make one single cubic yard.

Ready-Mix Delivery Truck (≥ 1 yd³)

Most cost-effective and labor-saving for driveways, house slabs, and large patios. Standard concrete transit mixer trucks hold 8 to 10 cubic yards.

Understanding Concrete Calculator & Formula

Mathematical Formula: Cubic Yards = (Length × Width × Thickness) ÷ 27 × (1 + Waste%)

The Concrete Calculator on CalculatorScale.com is engineered to deliver instant, mathematically verified calculations conforming strictly to standard institutional equations. Whether planning long-term investments, managing household budgets, tracking clinical fitness targets, analyzing academic genetics, calculating veterinary dosages, or converting dimensional units, every calculation updates dynamically in real time without lag.

Every formula used in this tool adheres to certified international standards, including World Health Organization biometric metrics, veterinary clinical guidelines, NIST physical conversion constants, and standard biological equations. Results are computed entirely client-side inside your browser with complete data privacy, ensuring your sensitive numbers and statistics never leave your device.

Our calculators are 100% free with no registration, subscriptions, or paywalls required. You can toggle between imperial and metric units, customize input parameters, export calculation summaries, or embed this calculator directly into your own website or blog.

How to Use the Concrete Calculator

  1. 1 Select your structure shape: Slabs/Footings/Walls, Round Columns/Tubes, or Stairs.
  2. 2 Enter the dimensions (length, width, thickness, or diameter) with your preferred units.
  3. 3 Select an extra waste allowance (+10% recommended for spillage and excavation variance).
  4. 4 Click the green "Calculate ▶️" button to get exact cubic yards, cubic meters, bag counts, weight, and costs.
FAQ & Help 3 questions

Concrete Calculator — Frequently Asked Questions

Q1 How do I calculate how many bags of concrete I need? ▾

One 80 lb bag yields 0.60 cubic feet, a 60 lb bag yields 0.45 cubic feet, and a 50 lb bag yields 0.375 cubic feet. Divide your total required cubic feet by the bag yield to get the exact bag count.

Q2 How many cubic feet are in a cubic yard of concrete? ▾

There are exactly 27 cubic feet in 1 cubic yard (3 ft × 3 ft × 3 ft = 27 ft³).

Q3 Why should I add 10% extra concrete waste allowance? ▾

Ground excavation is rarely perfectly level, forms flex during the pour, and spillage occurs. Adding a 5% to 10% safety buffer prevents running out of concrete mid-pour.
