5-Key Time Value of Money (TVM) Financial Solver (BA II Plus & HP 12CP compatible)
This finance calculator can be used to calculate the future value (FV), periodic payment (PMT), interest rate (I/Y), number of compounding periods (N), and PV (Present Value). Each of the following tabs represents the parameters to be calculated. It works the same way as the 5-key time value of money calculators, such as BA II Plus or HP 12CP calculator.
• Cash Flow Convention: Cash paid out (investments, loans disbursed, deposits) is entered as a negative value (-). Cash received (payouts, future balances, loan proceeds) is positive (+).
• Solver Tabs: Click any of the 5 tabs (FV, PMT, I/Y, N, PV) to select the unknown variable you wish to solve for.
• Settings: Open the Advanced Settings menu to adjust compounding frequency ($P/Y$, $C/Y$) and annuity timing (End vs Beginning/BGN mode).
Input Parameters (Solving for FV)
• Negative (-) Sign: Represents cash outflow (money leaving your pocket, e.g., initial deposit or periodic loan payments).
• Positive (+) Sign: Represents cash inflow (money received into your pocket, e.g., loan principal borrowed or final investment payout).

How to Use the Finance Calculator
- 1 Select which TVM parameter to solve for using the 5 solver tabs: [FV], [PMT], [I/Y], [N], or [PV].
- 2 Enter the remaining 4 parameters into the form fields using standard financial cash flow signs (cash paid out is negative "-", cash received is positive "+").
- 3 Optionally click the Settings button to configure Compounding Frequency (Annual, Semi-annual, Quarterly, Monthly, Daily) and Payment Timing (End vs Beginning / BGN mode).
- 4 Click Calculate to view the solved variable, total payments sum, net interest, and multi-line trajectory chart.
- 5 Review the step-by-step Period Schedule Table below and export the full schedule as a CSV spreadsheet.
Finance Calculator — Frequently Asked Questions
Q1 How do financial cash flow signs work (+ vs -)? ▾
TVM calculations follow standard cash flow accounting: money paid out (invested capital, loan disbursements, periodic deposits) is entered as a negative number (-), while money received (loan principal received, future account balances, annuities received) is entered as a positive number (+).
Q2 What is the difference between End and Beginning (BGN) mode? ▾
End mode (Ordinary Annuity) assumes periodic cash flows occur at the end of each compounding period (standard for mortgages and loans). Beginning mode (Annuity Due) assumes payments occur at the start of each period (common for leases and tuition).
Q3 How is the interest rate (I/Y) solved when it is unknown? ▾
Because the TVM equation is a high-degree polynomial when solving for rate, our calculator utilizes robust numerical root-finding algorithms (combining Newton-Raphson and Secant methods with bisection convergence fallbacks).
Q4 Does this calculator match physical financial calculators like the TI BA II Plus? ▾
Yes! The mathematical formulations and compounding mechanics are identical to industry-standard financial calculators such as the Texas Instruments BA II Plus and Hewlett-Packard HP 12C.
