How to Use the Gas Mileage Calculator
- 1 Select your unit preference: US Units (miles/gallons), Metric Units (km/liters), or Direct Trip Distance.
- 2 Enter your current and previous odometer readings from your last fuel fill-up.
- 3 Enter the amount of fuel added to the tank (gallons or liters).
- 4 Optionally enter the price per unit of fuel to calculate cost per mile and total expenditure.
- 5 Click the green "Calculate Gas Mileage ▶️" button to view MPG, L/100 km, and fuel expense analytics.
Gas Mileage Calculator — Frequently Asked Questions
Q1 How do you accurately calculate gas mileage between fill-ups? ▾
Fill your tank completely and record the starting odometer reading (or reset your trip meter to 0). On your next fill-up, note the new odometer reading and the exact gallons of gas purchased. Subtract previous mileage from current mileage to get miles driven, then divide by gallons added: MPG = Miles ÷ Gallons.
Q2 What is the difference between US MPG and Imperial MPG? ▾
An Imperial gallon (used in the UK and Canada) is larger than a US gallon (1 Imperial gallon = 4.546 liters vs 1 US gallon = 3.785 liters). Consequently, an Imperial MPG figure is approximately 20% higher than a US MPG rating for the same fuel efficiency.
Q3 How do you convert MPG to Liters per 100 km (L/100 km)? ▾
To convert US MPG to L/100 km, divide 235.215 by the MPG rating: L/100 km = 235.215 ÷ US MPG. For example, 24 MPG equals approximately 9.80 L/100 km.
