Loan Calculator — Frequently Asked Questions
Q1 What is the difference between an Amortized Loan, Deferred Loan, and Bond? ▾
An Amortized Loan is repaid through regular, fixed periodic installments covering both principal and interest. A Deferred Payment Loan requires zero periodic payments during the term, with the entire principal plus compounded interest paid as a single lump sum at maturity. A Bond (Present Value Loan) has a fixed predetermined face value due at maturity, and you calculate the discounted cash amount received at origination.
Q2 How is the periodic interest rate calculated across compounding frequencies? ▾
When compounding frequency (k) differs from payment frequency (p), the exact effective periodic interest rate is computed using i = (1 + r_nom / k)^(k / p) - 1. For continuous compounding, i = e^(r_nom / p) - 1.
Q3 What compounding frequency do standard loans and bonds use? ▾
Standard US mortgages and auto loans typically compound monthly (12 times per year). Canadian mortgages and government bonds frequently compound semi-annually (2 times per year). Certain certificates of deposit (CDs) or credit accounts compound daily or continuously.
Q4 Can I export or print the full repayment schedule in CSV format? ▾
Yes! All three calculator models include instant one-click CSV export and responsive pagination for both annual and period-by-period breakdowns in your selected global currency.
