RMD Calculator
Calculate annual Required Minimum Distributions (RMD) under SECURE Act 2.0 and IRS Publication 590-B, supporting the Uniform Lifetime Table and Joint Life Table with multi-decade schedule projections.
RMD Calculator
Once a person reaches the age of 73, the IRS requires retirement account holders to withdraw a minimum amount of money each year – this amount is referred to as the Required Minimum Distribution (RMD). This calculator calculates the RMD depending on your age and account balance. The calculations are based on the IRS Publication 590-B, so the calculator is intended for residents of the United States only.
• Enter your Year of birth and select your Year of RMD distribution tax year.
• Input the prior year-end fair market value balance (as of December 31st of the previous calendar year).
• If your spouse is the primary beneficiary and is more than 10 years younger than you, IRS Table II (Joint Life Expectancy) is automatically applied.

Understanding Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs)
Required Minimum Distributions ensure that tax-deferred retirement accounts (Traditional IRAs, SEP IRAs, SIMPLE IRAs, and 401(k) plans) are eventually drawn down and taxed.
SECURE Act 2.0 Ages
The starting age for RMDs is age 73 for those turning 72 on or after January 1, 2023 (born 1951–1959), and increases to age 75 for individuals born in 1960 or later.
Annual Deadlines
Your first RMD can be delayed until April 1st of the year following the year you reach RMD age. Subsequent RMDs must be taken by December 31st of each calendar year.
Penalties for Missing RMDs
Under SECURE 2.0, the excise tax penalty for failing to withdraw the full RMD amount was reduced from 50% down to 25%, and can be reduced to 10% if corrected in a timely manner.

RMD Calculator — Frequently Asked Questions
Q1 What is a Required Minimum Distribution (RMD)? ▾
An RMD is the minimum statutory amount that the IRS mandates you withdraw annually from your tax-deferred retirement accounts (Traditional IRAs, SEP IRAs, SIMPLE IRAs, and 401(k)s) once you reach your statutory RMD age.
Q2 What is my RMD starting age under SECURE Act 2.0? ▾
Under SECURE Act 2.0, individuals born between 1951 and 1959 must begin taking RMDs at age 73. For individuals born in 1960 or later, the starting RMD age increases to age 75.
Q3 When is the Joint Life Expectancy Table (Table II) used instead of Table III? ▾
The Joint Life and Last Survivor Expectancy Table (Table II) is used only if your spouse is your sole primary beneficiary and is more than 10 years younger than you. This results in a longer distribution period and lower annual mandatory withdrawals.
Q4 Do Roth IRAs have Required Minimum Distributions? ▾
No. Original owners of Roth IRAs are never required to take RMDs during their lifetime. However, designated beneficiaries who inherit a Roth IRA may be subject to RMD rules under the 10-year rule.
Q5 What happens if I fail to take my RMD on time? ▾
Under SECURE Act 2.0, the excise penalty for missing an RMD deadline is 25% of the amount not distributed. If the shortfall is corrected within a two-year correction window, the penalty is reduced to 10%.
