Simple Interest Calculator
Calculate simple interest, ending balances, annual percentage rates, or time periods with the classic formula I = P × r × t across days, months, and years, with periodic contribution options and compound comparisons.
Simple Interest Calculator
The Simple Interest Calculator calculates the interest and end balance based on the simple interest formula. Click the tabs to calculate the different parameters of the simple interest formula. In real life, most interest calculations involve compound interest. To calculate compound interest, use the Interest Calculator.
• Select which variable to solve for using the tabs: Balance, Principal, Term, or Rate.
• Customize rate compounding frequencies (per year, month, quarter, or day) and flexible term units (years, months, quarters, weeks, days).

Understanding Simple Interest & The I = P × r × t Formula
Simple interest is calculated exclusively on the original principal amount. Unlike compound interest, interest earned is never added back to the principal to compound in subsequent periods.
The Core Formula
The formula is I = P × r × t, where I is interest, P is principal, r is the nominal annual rate, and t is time. Total ending balance is A = P + I = P(1 + r·t).
Everyday Applications
Simple interest is frequently used in auto financing, short-term personal notes, U.S. Treasury bills, and certificates of deposit that distribute simple periodic interest payouts.
Simple vs. Compound
Simple interest yields linear growth, whereas compound interest yields exponential growth. Over a 10-year period, compound interest significantly outperforms simple interest.

How to Use the Simple Interest Calculator
- 1 Choose your preferred module: 4-Variable Simple Interest Solver, With Periodic Contributions, or Simple vs. Compound Growth Comparison.
- 2 In Module 1 (Solver), select the variable to calculate (Interest, Starting Principal, Annual Rate %, or Time Period).
- 3 Select your desired time unit (Years, Months, Weeks, 365-Day Exact Year, or 360-Day Commercial Banker’s Year).
- 4 In Module 2 (Contributions), model additional regular monthly or annual deposits to see cumulative simple interest.
- 5 In Module 3 (Comparison), compare linear simple interest accumulation side-by-side against exponential compound growth.
- 6 Click "Calculate" to generate instant result summaries, donut breakdowns, and period-by-period accumulation schedules.
Simple Interest Calculator — Frequently Asked Questions
Q1 What is simple interest and how does it work? ▾
Simple interest is calculated exclusively on the original principal amount of a loan or deposit. Unlike compound interest, previous interest payments do not earn additional interest in future periods.
Q2 What is the simple interest formula? ▾
The fundamental simple interest formula is I = P × r × t, where I is the interest earned or owed, P is the starting principal, r is the annual interest rate (as a decimal), and t is the time in years.
Q3 What is the difference between exact (365-day) and ordinary/banker’s (360-day) simple interest? ▾
Exact simple interest divides the number of days by 365. Ordinary simple interest (also called Banker’s Rule) divides days by 360, which produces a slightly higher interest payout because each day represents a larger fraction (1/360) of the year.
Q4 When is simple interest used in the real world? ▾
Simple interest is commonly applied to consumer auto loans, short-term personal promissory notes, U.S. Treasury bills, and certain certificates of deposit (CDs) that pay out interest periodically rather than reinvesting it.
Q5 How does simple interest compare to compound interest over long horizons? ▾
Over short horizons (such as less than a year), simple interest and compound interest yield nearly identical amounts. Over longer periods, compound interest grows exponentially as interest earns interest, drastically outpacing linear simple interest.
