How IP Subnetting and CIDR Masks Work

An IPv4 address is composed of 32 bits divided into 4 octets (e.g. 192.168.1.1). Subnet masking divides these 32 bits into two parts:

  • Network Identifier (Prefix bits): Shared by all devices on the same local physical or virtual network segment.
  • Host Identifier: Unique address identifying an individual computer, smartphone, or router interface.

The bitwise formula to determine the network address is: Network ID = IP Address AND Subnet Mask.

Understanding IP Subnet Calculator & Formula

Mathematical Formula: Usable Hosts = 2^(32 - CIDR) - 2 | Subnet Mask = 32-bit binary with CIDR leading 1s | Network ID = IP bitwise-AND Subnet Mask | Broadcast = Network ID bitwise-OR Wildcard Mask

The IP Subnet Calculator on CalculatorScale.com is engineered to deliver instant, mathematically verified calculations conforming strictly to standard institutional equations. Whether planning long-term investments, managing household budgets, tracking clinical fitness targets, analyzing academic genetics, calculating veterinary dosages, or converting dimensional units, every calculation updates dynamically in real time without lag.

Every formula used in this tool adheres to certified international standards, including World Health Organization biometric metrics, veterinary clinical guidelines, NIST physical conversion constants, and standard biological equations. Results are computed entirely client-side inside your browser with complete data privacy, ensuring your sensitive numbers and statistics never leave your device.

Our calculators are 100% free with no registration, subscriptions, or paywalls required. You can toggle between imperial and metric units, customize input parameters, export calculation summaries, or embed this calculator directly into your own website or blog.

How to Use the IP Subnet Calculator

  1. 1 Enter an IPv4 address (e.g. 192.168.1.1) and select your CIDR subnet mask prefix (/8 through /32).
  2. 2 Click "Calculate ▶️" to view the network address, broadcast address, usable host IP range, total host count, subnet bitmap, and wildcard mask.
FAQ & Help 4 questions

IP Subnet Calculator — Frequently Asked Questions

Q1 What is CIDR notation in IP subnetting? ▾

Classless Inter-Domain Routing (CIDR) notation expresses an IP address and its subnet mask prefix length using a slash followed by the count of leading 1 bits in the mask (e.g., 192.168.1.0/24 corresponds to 255.255.255.0).

Q2 How do you determine the network ID and broadcast address? ▾

The Network ID has all host bits set to 0 in binary. The Broadcast Address has all host bits set to 1. Both are reserved and cannot be assigned to individual host devices.

Q3 How do you calculate usable host addresses per subnet? ▾

The total number of IP addresses in a subnet with h host bits is 2^h. The usable host count is 2^h - 2 (subtracting the network address and broadcast address).

Q4 What is the difference between IPv4 and IPv6 subnetting? ▾

IPv4 uses 32-bit addresses formatted as 4 decimal octets, while IPv6 uses 128-bit hexadecimal addresses divided into 8 groups of 16 bits, providing virtually inexhaustible address capacity.
