Annuity Calculator
Calculate the growth and accumulation phase of an annuity with initial principal, recurring annual/monthly deposits, Annuity Due vs. Ordinary Annuity timing, and detailed amortization schedules.
Annuity Calculator
The Annuity Calculator is intended for use involving the accumulation phase of an annuity and shows growth based on regular deposits. Please use our Annuity Payout Calculator to determine the income payment phase of an annuity.
• Beginning (Annuity Due): Deposits occur at the beginning of each period, compounding interest for the full duration of each cycle.
• End (Ordinary Annuity): Deposits occur at the end of each period, compounding interest on the previous starting balance.

Understanding the Accumulation Phase of Annuities
An annuity is a contractual financial product issued by an insurance company designed to accept and grow funds from an individual and then, upon annuitization, pay out a stream of guaranteed payments at a later point in time.
Accumulation vs. Payout
During the accumulation phase, you make initial and ongoing deposits that grow on a tax-deferred basis. During the payout phase, the accumulated principal and earnings are converted into periodic income checks.
Annuity Due vs. Ordinary
In an Annuity Due, payments occur at the beginning of each period, yielding higher total compound return because each contribution immediately earns interest. In an Ordinary Annuity, payments are deposited at period ends.
Tax-Deferred Compounding
Interest and capital gains inside non-qualified annuities grow tax-free until withdrawal. Taxes are paid only upon distributions, allowing your full balance to compound without annual tax drag.

Annuity Calculator — Frequently Asked Questions
Q1 What is the difference between an Annuity Due and an Ordinary Annuity? ▾
The primary difference is the timing of payments. In an Annuity Due, deposits are made at the beginning of each payment period, meaning every deposit immediately starts compounding and earns interest for the entire period. In an Ordinary Annuity, deposits occur at the end of each period, earning interest starting in the subsequent cycle. An Annuity Due always produces a higher accumulated end balance than an Ordinary Annuity with identical payments.
Q2 What is the Annuity Accumulation Phase vs. Payout Phase? ▾
The accumulation phase is the period during which you deposit money into the annuity (either via an upfront lump-sum or ongoing periodic contributions) and allow the funds to grow on a tax-deferred basis. The payout phase (annuitization) begins when you convert that accumulated balance into guaranteed periodic income streams for a set term or for life.
Q3 How does tax-deferral benefit annuity growth? ▾
With a non-qualified annuity, interest, dividends, and capital gains accumulate without being taxed in the year they are earned. Because taxes are deferred until withdrawal, 100% of your earnings remain invested to compound over time, generating significantly greater long-term wealth compared to a taxable account subject to annual dividend or capital gains drag.
Q4 What is the difference between Fixed, Variable, and Indexed annuities? ▾
A Fixed Annuity provides a guaranteed minimum interest rate set by the insurance provider. A Variable Annuity invests in sub-accounts (similar to mutual funds), providing higher potential upside along with market risk. A Fixed-Indexed Annuity credits interest based on the performance of an underlying equity benchmark (like the S&P 500) while providing a guaranteed minimum floor (typically 0%) against loss of principal.
Q5 Can I combine both annual and monthly additions in this calculator? ▾
Yes! This calculator runs a full monthly simulation engine that accurately compounds both recurring monthly deposits and annual lump-sum additions according to your selected period timing.
