Social Security Calculator
The U.S. Social Security website provides calculators for various purposes. While they are all useful, there currently isn't a way to help determine the ideal (financially speaking) age at which a person between the ages of 62-70 should apply for their Social Security retirement benefits. This tool is designed specifically for this purpose. Please note that this calculator is intended for U.S. Social Security purposes only.
• Module 1 (Ideal Application Age): Evaluates all claiming ages between 62 and 70 based on your birth year, Full Retirement Age (FRA), and longevity.
• Module 2 (Compare Two Ages): Directly pits two application ages against each other to calculate the exact breakeven crossover point.

How Social Security Claiming Ages Impact Lifetime Wealth
Deciding when to claim Social Security is one of the most critical retirement decisions. Claiming early at age 62 permanently reduces monthly checks by up to 30%, whereas delaying until age 70 permanently increases monthly benefits by up to 24%–32% above your Full Retirement Age baseline.
Early Claiming at Age 62
Claiming at 62 provides 5 to 8 additional years of income checks. However, benefits suffer an actuarial penalty (up to 30% reduction), locking in lower COLA compounding bases for life.
Full Retirement Age (FRA)
Reaching your statutory FRA (age 66 to 67) unlocks 100% of your Primary Insurance Amount without early reductions. Furthermore, the Social Security earnings test limit no longer applies after reaching FRA.
Delayed Credits to Age 70
For each year you delay past FRA up to age 70, benefits grow by a guaranteed 8% annual return (2/3% per month). For retirees with average or above-average longevity, delaying to 70 delivers the highest cumulative lifetime payout.

Social Security Calculator — Frequently Asked Questions
Q1 What is Full Retirement Age (FRA)? ▾
Full Retirement Age (FRA) is the statutory age at which you are entitled to receive 100% of your Social Security Primary Insurance Amount (PIA). For individuals born in 1960 or later, FRA is 67. For individuals born between 1943 and 1954, FRA is 66. For birth years 1955–1959, FRA increases incrementally in 2-month steps (from 66 and 2 months up to 66 and 10 months).
Q2 How much is my benefit reduced if I claim early at age 62? ▾
If your FRA is 67 and you claim at the earliest possible age of 62 (60 months early), your monthly benefit is permanently reduced by 30%. The reduction formula cuts benefits by 5/9 of 1% per month for the first 36 months (20% reduction), plus 5/12 of 1% per month for each additional month beyond 36 (10% additional reduction).
Q3 How much do benefits increase if I delay claiming until age 70? ▾
For each year you delay claiming Social Security past your Full Retirement Age (up to age 70), you earn Delayed Retirement Credits (DRCs) of 8% per year (2/3 of 1% per month). If your FRA is 67, delaying until age 70 permanently increases your monthly benefit check by 24% above your FRA baseline.
Q4 What is the typical breakeven age between claiming at age 62 vs age 70? ▾
Without factoring in investment returns or inflation, the nominal breakeven age between claiming early at 62 vs delaying to 70 typically occurs around age 78 to 80. If you live past age 80, the cumulative checks collected by waiting for the higher age 70 payout will permanently exceed the total money collected by claiming early at 62.
Q5 Does the Social Security earnings limit apply after reaching Full Retirement Age? ▾
No. The Retirement Earnings Test only applies to beneficiaries who claim before reaching their Full Retirement Age and continue to work. Once you reach your statutory Full Retirement Age, there is zero limit on how much earned income you can receive without any reduction to your Social Security benefits.
